Are you a pregnant or new mom/birthing person who is feeling sad, tired, overwhelmed, or stressed? Do you have trouble sleeping, experience mood swings, or generally feel run down and depressed?

Postpartum depression and other mental health conditions are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth. More than 20% of new moms & birthing persons experience them.

If you are feeling this way, you are not alone. POEM can help.

POEM (Perinatal Outreach & Encouragement for Moms) is MHAOhio’s perinatal* mental health program.

(*perinatal = the period of time from the start of a pregnancy up to a year after giving birth)

POEM offers support, resources, referrals, and a sense of community to help moms and birthing persons in Ohio feel heard, understood, and empowered.

POEM’s services include:

  • Peer-to-Peer Support: The certified peer staff at POEM listens and understands like only peers can. You’ll receive a caring and understanding voice, access to specialized counseling, and/or referrals to support services for pregnancy and infant loss. Reach out to POEM staff at 614-315-8989 (Central Ohio) or 937-660-9220 (Dayton) or refer yourself or someone else.
  • Mentoring Program: Mentors are moms and birthing persons who’ve been there. They can talk through the challenges of motherhood and offer guidance, emotional support, and helpful information when you need it. Contact us for more information, or refer yourself or someone else.
  • Support Groups: Peer support groups meet regularly, both virtually and in-person when possible, and offer the opportunity to get support from moms and birthing persons with similar experiences.
  • Rise Support for Black and African American Moms: Rise provides all POEM services exclusively by and for Black mothers and birthing persons, including a providers of color network. We Rise for Black moms because we know that Black women are at a higher risk for maternal depression/anxiety and are less likely to have their symptoms addressed with quality care.
  • POEM Statewide
